Looking Beyond the Veil
The report concludes "The perceptions of Muslims and their contribution to society is generally positive". And "Public versus private displays of religiosity is not a new issue in this country, but in this case there is clearly a need and a desire for clarity and debate to help people make an informed decision".
The issue of the veil has a high profile in political, cultural and religious contexts. The issue was highlighted in Kirklees by the dismissal of a Muslim classroom assistant from Headfield Junior School, Dewsbury in October 2006. Later in the same year, the debate was given further impetus by the comments made by Jack Straw MP the current Justice Minister that the veil is a "visible statement of separation and of difference".
The Council, which was set up ten years ago to promote understanding, and to improve relations between the various faith communities of Kirklees, secured funding in 2007 from the Department of Communities and Local Government to carry out the research for this report.
It is now their intention to use the report to inititiate a series of discussion forums. [See events page] The aim of these forums is to provide safe spaces where people from all communities can come together to openly discuss the findings of the report. These forums will also provide opportunities to build trust and understanding and to increase awareness and education of common issues between all sections of the community. See the report pdf below.
